I'm a singer/songwriter living just outside of St Albans, Hertfordshire UK, I have been attending open mic's in the area for the last three years, performing covers of a variety of songs. I gained a lot of experience in Performance and Stage Craft and was given lots of helpful advice from my Peers. That is the purpose of open mics.
Now I will begin to add in my own songs to the best covers I can do.
I consider myself to be a modern player. Which basically means I do not have reverence for equipment from the past.
I prefer to play an electric guitar. But can't make my mind up between Humbuckers and Single Coils. My amp is currently a Boss Katana 50 watt. I don’t take it to venues I just plug my electric guitar into the venues PA. I have guitar effects pedals but again, or for the moment, at least, I don't take any to open mics.
I like most types of music. but I prefer british blues, rock, pop, acoustic and folk. I still consider myself to be a member of Redbourn Folk Club. But I haven’t attended for ages. Sorry Guys.
Sundays I used to go to the Horn Pub in St Albans where Bill Johnson runs the very successful Blue Angel Acoustic Cafe open mic from 3pm to 6pm. the link isn't working.Try a Facebook search instead. It might fail as the page is private. It's a great open Mic with plenty of players and well worth going to.
My current must go to is - The Fisheries Wharf Cafe, Hemel Hempstead. It’s on the second and forth Mondays of each month. Hosted by Shane Lamont it starts at 7pm and goes on until 11pm. Be warned this is a very popular event so if you want to get your name on the players list get there before 6pm (when the cafe opens) and get your name down. Parking at the event is limited but there is street parking.
There are lots of other places near me that have open mics I have been to some of them and am working my way through the rest.
If you are looking for venues in your area or the UK generally I suggest you look at the web site lemonrock it's a live music listing site. It's extensive with two pricing models. a 'free' one for people looking for somewhere to go and a 'paid for' for bands and venues to advertise and promote themselves.

Thats about all I have to say at the moment.
Thanks for looking at my site.

Steven.
